• The illuminated filament of a frosted incandescent light bulb radiates with electric energy in the form of heat and light. This image was captured using a 4×5 Kodak Masterview camera and recorded directly onto photosensitive paper creating a paper negative. The image was then digitally scanned and inverted to produce the image you see here.

For the month of July, I traded my computer, which sits in a dimly lit corner of my apartment, its daunting archive of photographic memories awaiting edits, and browser tabs of endless distractions, for a pad of paper and pencil, a seat by the window, and lilies in my kitchen.
• The Canon AE-1 is a 35 mm single-lens reflex (SLR) film camera for use with interchangeable lenses. It was manufactured by Canon Camera K. K. (today Canon Incorporated) in Japan from April 1976 to 1984. It uses an electronically controlled, electromagnet horizontal cloth focal plane shutter, with a speed range of 2 to 1/1000 second plus Bulb and flash X-sync of 1/60th second. The AE-1 is a historically significant SLR, both because it was the first microprocessor-equipped SLR and because of its sales. Backed by a major advertising campaign, the AE-1 sold over one million units, which made it an unprecedented success in the SLR market.

  • Princeton University Stadium is a stadium in Princeton, New Jersey, United States. It is primarily used for American football, and is the home field of the Princeton Tigers. The stadium opened in 1998 on the site of Princeton's former stadium, Palmer Stadium, and seats 27,773.

The year and a half needed to tear down Palmer Stadium and build the new field where it had stood meant that Princeton would not have an operational stadium for the 1997 season. Because of this the team was forced to play all of its games on the road.

The stadium's exterior shell mirrors the layout of Palmer Stadium, and the grandstands are four sided, with a second deck added on all sides except the south. The press box and luxury boxes are located above the west-side upper deck. One of the stadium's structural pillars houses the University's new rock-climbing wall, which opened in the fall of 2008. In addition to the stadium itself, the building project included building a track to the immediate south of the venue, which shares the stadium's south end facilities. (Previously, the track was located inside the stadium.)

  • While in college at the School of Visual Arts I briefly knew an artist by the name of Greg Sohn. It must have been around five or so in the evening and he and I were sitting, conversing in my room; Greg was quietly strumming his guitar to add some noise during the pauses. The sun was going down behind a thinly overcast sky and this caused some of the most striking light I had experienced in the interior of my roughly, eight by twelve foot dorm room. Luckily I had my Mamiya C330 nearby and so I set up a tripod and started snapping. The light had such a particular quality, it was dark in my room yet what the light fell on seemed to be brighter than it should have been. I still remember the feeling. The image has striking contrast and yet maintains a smooth tonal grading along the neck of the guitar. Since that day I've always kept my eye out lookin' for that light.

  • A woman walking along the waves. A lone, dark pickup truck parked upon the beach. Two dots in the distance, each in their own worlds. You can feel out of place as a photographer. I often I do. You’re a detached participant, an observer. You’re a follower lead by whatever you find interesting. You follow the light, follow the activity. You hope to find the poetry of it all.

I followed families, fish and feathered gulls. I followed sand pipers and footprints. I followed plastic bags, the castaways of midday meals. I followed fisherman that moved, fighting the wind, the rain and the spray of splashing waves, and those who sat statuesque in their status surveying their surroundings. I followed paths and walked along fences that disappeared into dunes, man’s hand buried by time.
Experience is the awareness of differences.
It must be something like that.
Simplified.
It's all intervals.

I know the softness of a touch because
I know the toughness of stone.
I know heat because
I know the cold.

The most exciting
music has many changes.
It leaps from high to low,
rushes forward with rapid rhythms.
It's all intervals,
differences,
contrasts.

The soft gradient of light on my ceiling
behind the sharp points of a plant's leaves,
a low drone with two piercing tones.

  • Note:
One of the more interesting elements of cities is those pockets of space tucked away and which in their solitude–and seemingly especially when they are empty of people–take on a life of their own. They become sets in a play. Sets that have been so meticulously constructed, where every possible detail adds to the story or the mystery of the space. I really enjoy imagining what might have happened in these places. What conversations were had? Which were overheard in passing, and of those what fragments did the passers-by hear? What is all of this stuff? What was it used for? Why is it no longer needed? Where does it all go from here? I have so many questions, and I imagine so many scenarios playing out. They really are like stages, and they always have interesting lighting.

  • Patrick Simpson is a native of New Jersey from Bridgewater. His initial interest in film stemmed from smaller budget feel good comedies that usually involved various hilarities all mixed into a somewhat ludicrous adventure. This image was created as the promotional image for one of his short films, "Accidental Hero." To this day it remains one of my most enjoyable shoots due to the fact that I had an entire interior film set at my disposal. I utilized the lighting grid on the ceiling in order to mimic a lit city alley.
