"There are two men inside the artist, the poet and the craftsman. One is born a poet. One becomes a craftsman."
- Emile Zola
In may, 2015 Polish artist/craftsman Maciej Markowicz teamed up with a Polish American welder named Krzysiek to quickly and carefully fabricate the Leaning Piano in a metalshop in Brooklyn, New York. Part sculpture, part instrument, part furniture Leaning Piano was inspired by wacław szymanowski's heraldic 1906 sculpture of chopin (warsaw) which is similarly characterized by a monumental and centrifugal force of movement through heavy materials and negative space. Photographer S R Shilling, a friend of the artist, was asked to accompany both crafstmen in order to document the creation of and final appearance of Leaning Piano which made its debut appearance in the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland's exhibition space in the 27th Annual International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) 2015.
